With sunny skies, warmer temperatures, and vacation for many, the summer months offer us special opportunities to enjoy your relationship with the Lord a little differently. As we embark on the summer journey, think of how you will prioritize your relationship with your family. In this article, I hope to encourage you with several ideas, and I’d love to hear ideas too. Text them to me at 319-453-2065 and lead off with “Summer Worship Idea(s).”
Prioritize the Eternal with Your Family
Summer often brings a break to the extra-curricular activities that rule the school calendar, giving you extra time to spend together as a family. As you spend time together, prioritize spiritual growth investment opportunities like reading the Word and praying together. Pick a book of the Bible to read and discuss together. One option is to read through the Proverb of the day, since there are 31 Proverbs. Lean into your family members a little more by asking them how they’re doing, and how you can pray for them—how you can bless them. — Deuteronomy 6:4-9; 20-25; Proverbs 11:25.
Plan to Read and/or Listen to the Word Individually and Sing to the Lord
I love reading the Bible and listening to it while I read. There are many details I often pick up by listening that I miss when reading (or vice versa). The summer months give a great opportunity to sit outdoors on a blanket in the grass or sand, or lake/river side with a bluetooth speaker or earbuds. Turn those speakers up and listen to the Word while you read! And find your favorite worship playlist and sing songs of adoration and praise to the Lord. — Colossians 3:16; Psalm 7:17; 13:6; 104:33
Take Breaks from Some Activities, Not All Activities
Carve out time to rest, to let your body heal from the busyness of the other 36-weeks of the year. But remember that we’re not called to take a break from our church family. This doesn’t mean you can’t miss church for a vacation, but it does mean you should not consider attending worship optional for most weeks. Go kayaking on Saturday, or even Sunday afternoon, but be sure to prioritize worshiping with your church
Remember Our Creator
Trees, plants, flowers, even weeds have already begun growing. As they grow, slow down and stand (or sit) in awe of the Maker who so wisely and meticulously designed everything needed to make them grow and bloom into such beauty. Parents, help your children see God’s handiwork in it all, and stop to praise Him with them. Look up to see the sun in all its beauty. Remind yourself and your family that everything communicates the beauty and power of God! — Psalm 19
Set Your Screens Aside
We’re entranced by staring at a screen that has a fun game, cool apps, news, and social media. Each may have their place, but this summer, focus on the eyes and hearts of those nearest to you, and become entranced by the gift from God they are to you! — Ephesians 5:15-17
Practice Hospitality
Consider inviting neighbors or some from our church family over to grill out and play yard games. Hospitality provides a great opportunity to engage others in friendly conversation with the Lord. If you invite friends or neighbors you think may be unsaved, don’t make it about converting them. But do share about the Lord’s faithfulness in your life with them. If you invite church family over—and you should (1 Peter 4:9)—consider how you can encourage them in the Lord. Even spend a little time in prayer together — Colossians 4:5; 1 Peter 4:9; Acts 20:17-21
Plan Your Giving
Whether it’s a vacation or a staycation, sometimes we miss church and it is easy to forget to prioritize your giving to the Lord. As those who strive to be wholehearted followers of Christ, planning your giving for times when you’re away is one practical way to prioritize the work of the ministry by living according to biblical treasure principles.
3 Ways to Schedule Your Giving:
1. Schedule checks through your bank throughout the summer
2. Schedule recurring giving through Church Center
3. Write and mail post-dated checks to the church before you are on vacation
Planning your giving is not about the church being in financial need—the Lord is supplying well and will continue to. Planning your giving—like planning a purposeful summer—is about your heart before the Lord. Giving should not be from what is left over after we’ve done all that we want to. Wholehearted followers of Christ love to give first and give their best to the Lord. — Philippians 4:10-20 (esp. 16-20)
