• Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done - Are You Sure? (Mark 10:32-45)

  • Fearless, Cinematic Walking - Don Quixote, Captain Picard, Prince Edmund, Young King David (Mark 10:32)

    32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.”

  • Perhaps, reflecting on Isaiah 35

    Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine. I will be with you when you pass through the waters, and when you pass through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. You will not be scorched when you walk through the fire, and the flame will not burn you.”

  • It was an exciting time! A moment in history. (10:35)

    35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

    The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Mk 10:35–40.

  • You do not know what you are asking.

    Drink the Cup = Suffering

    Baptism = Death

  • Ok. All of you guys. You still do not get it. (10:41)

    41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

    The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Mk 10:41–45.

  • To Share in Christ' glory is to share in the suffering and death of Christ. To be great is to be a servant to all.

    What is it in our lives that we are holding onto so tightly that we can’t let go of it and get on board with Jesus? Are you seeking greatness? Great! But is it your own greatness or is it Christs? Are you seeking security and safety for your family? Great! But is it so that you can have your own legacy after you pass or is it for God’s glory? Maybe Christianity for you is a get out of jail card. Maybe you heard a version of the gospel that indwelled in you a fear of hell which has scared you from the world. Great! But that’s not Christianity. To share in Christ’s glory is to share in the suffering and death of Christ. To be great is to be a servant to all.

  • Martin Luther King Jr.

    “You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You don’t’ have to know Plato and Aristotle. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of relativity. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics. You don’t have to know how to diagnose a faulty tractor transmission. You don’t have to know how to balance the cores in the nuclear reactors. You don’t have to know how to sort data on an excel spreadsheet. You don’t have to know the science of seed placement for maximum production. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. You only need a heart of grace. A soul generated by love.”

  • The Kingdom of God is here. Do you see it? Do you seek it?

    . The same God that made this earth as rich as he made it with Pleiades and Andromeda just so I can gaze at it and know how big He is, is the same God whose kingdom is here. It is the God who is preparing a new earth and his new kingdom for us. It is not going to disappoint; it is going to be even better – far beyond anything that we can gain from our own ambitions and desires. The American dream has nothing on the Kingdom of God.
